How to Source Custom Toys and Novelty Products in China: A Buyer Checklist
A practical buyer checklist for sourcing custom toys and novelty products in China, covering intended user, materials, construction, moving parts, electronics, decoration, packaging, samples, safety requirements, and supplier confirmation.
Toys and novelty products cover a very wide range of items, from soft stress toys and promotional novelty pieces to plastic products, plush items, small mechanical products, light-up items, and battery-powered products. Because of that range, one generic quotation checklist does not fit every product. The most useful starting point is a clear reference plus an explanation of who the product is for and how it will be used. Final materials, structure, decoration, electronic components, packaging, age-related requirements, testing, documentation, quantity requirements, and production feasibility should be confirmed for the actual product and destination market. 1. Start with the exact product type and intended user Share a product photo, physical sample, supplier link, drawing, 3D file, sketch, or product code. Explain whether the target is a stress toy, plush item, plastic novelty, promotional toy, figurine, light-up item, mechanical toy, collectible, party item, or another product. Also explain the intended user and sales context. A decorative novelty for adults and a toy intended for young children can have very different design, labeling, small-parts, material, and market requirements. 2. Break the product into materials and components Main body material Soft, foam, silicone, rubber-like, textile, plastic, wood, metal, paper, or other component Stuffing or filling where relevant Paint, coating, printing, decal, sticker, or surface decoration Moving parts, hinges, springs, magnets, fasteners, or connectors Electronic module, light, speaker, switch, motor, battery holder, or wiring where relevant Accessories, cords, straps, clips, or separate pieces Material names and photos are not enough by themselves. Confirm the material target, feel, thickness, hardness, surface finish, color, and any function that matters. 3. Treat the reference product as a starting configuration A reference sample may show one workable combination of size, material, hardness, stuffing, color, mechanism, and decoration. That does not mean every detail must remain fixed. Material, thickness, hardness, filling, finish, color, and similar specifications can often be adjusted around the buyer’s requirements, subject to product structure, intended use, quantity, supplier capability, and any applicable safety or market requirement. 4. Confirm dimensions and small components carefully For novelty products, a few millimeters can affect fit, assembly, appearance, and packaging. Provide overall dimensions and identify any small detachable or moving part that matters. Overall length, width, and height Diameter or thickness Part-to-part fit Opening or cavity dimensions Small detachable pieces Accessories and attachment points 5. If the product moves, lights up, makes sound, or uses batteries, define the function clearly Do not quote an electronic or mechanical novelty product using only a photo. Describe the actual function, operating sequence, battery type if known, switch position, sound or light behavior, charging method where relevant, and expected accessories. If the product includes a battery, charger, electronic module, magnet, liquid, powder, chemical component, or other special feature, identify that early because sourcing, transport, documentation, and destination requirements may change. 6. Confirm artwork, character design, and branding rights If the product uses a logo, graphic, character, slogan, shape, or other protected design, make sure you have the right to use it. Benson Sourcing product development should not rely on unauthorized third-party trademarks or copyrighted characters. Logo position and size Printed or molded graphics Embroidery or fabric labels Custom color combinations Custom mold or shape where appropriate Packaging artwork 7. Treat destination-market safety and labeling as product-specific Toy and novelty requirements depend on the product, intended age, materials, small parts, electronics, batteries, magnets, liquids, destination market, and sales channel. Do not assume that one supplier certificate covers every item or every configuration. If testing, warning labels, age grading, material declarations, or other documentation are important to the project, confirm the requirement and verify the actual product-specific evidence before relying on it. 8. Plan packaging around both presentation and protection Individual bag, box, blister, display pack, or no retail pack Insert or tray Protective wrap Barcode and SKU label Warning or age label where applicable Instruction sheet Accessory packing Display carton or inner box Export carton protection Products with paint, soft surfaces, protruding parts, electronics, or easily deformed shapes may need different protection during transport. 9. What information helps produce a more useful quotation? Reference photo, sample, drawing, 3D file, product link, or product code Product type and intended user Approximate quantity Overall dimensions Material and surface target if known Moving, electronic, light, sound, or battery function if relevant Number of colors or designs Logo or artwork Packaging requirement Destination country or market Known safety, retailer, marketplace, testing, or documentation requirement Target price range if you already have one Sample or timing requirement 10. Use the sample to confirm function and construction Depending on the item, check dimensions, material feel, hardness, seams, molded details, moving parts, switches, lights, sound, battery fit, graphics, paint, logo placement, accessories, packaging, and agreed safety-related construction points. Record which approved sample becomes the bulk-production reference. What to send Benson Sourcing Start with a product photo or link plus the approximate quantity. Add the intended user, size, materials, function, logo, colors, packaging, destination market, and any known safety or documentation requirements. A complete technical file is not required before the first sourcing discussion.
